''The Road" a fictional novel by Cormac McCarthy uses a suspenseful journey to convey a future with no hope remaining in which a father and son embark to. The result in which the demise of the father would lead to, a lesson learned by the son. Not only that but also showed how work was put in to keep the son alive no matter what obstacle came upon them, and showed hope for the future. At the beginning of the story, the plot was shown when it told the reader that a apocalypse- similarity would occur and would lead a son and a father on the road, and what would seem like a journey with no hope. As the son and father and father went on in their journey until they would encounter something on their path. It was evident when the author stated " Cant we help him Papa? No we cant help him. There's nothing to be done for him"(50) this would show no compassion from the father but it did show the son that if he would encounter a occasion like this he would have to ignore the stranger and not trust anybody that came upon him. The father was preparing for the worst teaching his son everything he would need to know for survival. But something was evident in the encounter with the old man was how the son showed compassion for him and wanted to help him, this signified he was different and he would be an important figure for the story as it went on. As the story went on the son and father would encounter a even more catastrophic problem when the author stated " Why are you looking at him? I can look where I want to. No you cant if you look at him again I'll shoot you"(65) this told the reader how the father was not going to let anyone get close to his son even if meant to commit a murder. In which he would end up doing until he died to keep his son safe and protected. Not only did this tell the reader that the father was a brave person but also showed that the son was being kept alive for a reason and only the father knew why which would be revealed further on in the story. As the story went on the dad would end up getting sick and for matters worse he would end up getting shot by an arrow which would lead to his death but what was important was the conversation he had with his son " I want to be with you , you cant... you have to carry on the fire. Where is it? I don't know where it is. Yes you do it's inside you. It was always there"(278) this told the reader that all this time the father kept his son alive and showed him surviving skills for one reason because he had the spark that would show hope for the future. He just wanted to prepare his on till the day came in which he would need to come out and show the world the fire that had been inside of him all this time he just needed to realize it by himself. The son would end up leaving his father and going with another family in which he knew that would benefit him. This novel intended purpose was to show how one person can light up the world with just one spark not matter the circumstances and obstacles that come up in your path. This is relatable to the real world as all that is needed to change the future is one person to use his fire and share them with the world and spark other people to do the same.
